Storytelling with machines

This class meets the requirements for an IDeATe portal. Storytelling with Machines uses fairy tales and automata to teach students basic narrative and mechanical engineering. I am co-teaching this class with Mechanical Engineer and researcher Shraddha Joshi.

Fairy Tales

The use of fairy tales gives students a common narrative structure to borrow from. Students storyboard and rewrite a scene from their favorite fairy tale. Then, choosing from that scene, students will choose a specific interaction to animate via automaton.

Identity

Like fairy tales, technology reflects popular culture and belief. Automata and fairy tales are memetic devices students will iterate and create in this class. Students will explore the intersection of culture, technology, narrative, and identity through workshop and critique.
